New-look Team Sidorova to compete in Curling World Cup first leg

Team Sidorova have been confirmed as Russia’s representatives in the women’s event at the opening Curling World Cup leg in Suzhou, China.

Although Russia are not entering a men’s team, the experienced quartet skipped by Anna Sidorova will give them a great chance of starting the inaugural four-leg series strongly.

Vice-skip Margarita Fomina will be third with two new faces in the line-up in the form of ex-world junior champion Yulia Portunova and first Yulia Guzieva.

Portunova and Guzieva won bronze as part of Team Moiseeva in March’s Women’s World Championship in North Bay, Ontario.

Team Sidorova have a proud record in the World Championship having claimed bronze in 2014, 2015 and 2016 and silver last year in Beijing.

The two-time Olympians are currently warming up for Suzhou by competing at the Oakville Fall Classic in Canada.

Ahead of the trip to China in two weeks, first Guzieva said: “It is a great honour to participate in the Curling World Cup wearing the colours of my country. It is also a great feeling to realise that you are the one who represents your country at these competitions.”

Maria Komarova and Daniil Goriachev will fly the flag for Russia in the mixed doubles in Suzhou. The pair, coached by Vasily Cudin, were silver medallists in the World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship in Sweden earlier this year.

“We are expecting interesting games,” commented Goriachev. “It is also interesting to visit a new place, where I have never been before, and get to know its culture.”
