Olympic bronze medallists Team De Cruz heading to China

The Swiss Curling Association has announced the teams who will compete in the first leg of the Curling World Cup in Suzhou, China.

Switzerland’s men’s rink will be Team de Cruz - the bronze medallists from the Winter Olympics in PyeongChang earlier this year skipped by Peter de Cruz. Fourth Benoit Schwarz and third Claudio will line-up alongside lead Valentin Tanner.

The rink won gold at the 2010 World Junior Championships and have since been in and around the medals at most major championships since, with bronze medals in two World Championships (2014 and 2017).

De Cruz, 28, commented: “We are going into every competition we play to win it, but we know that we will have to play very well to reach this goal because of the high level of competition.”

Travelling to China alongside Team de Cruz will be Jenny Perret and Martin Rios, who have been chosen to represent Switzerland in the mixed doubles event.

The duo were silver medallists at the Olympics in PyeongChang earlier this year and were world champions in 2017.

The Curling World Cup will be the first opportunity for athletes to win prize money whilst wearing their nation’s colours, with $USD 33,000 available in prize money for each of the first three legs and $USD 56,000 for the Grand Final in Beijing next year.
